Writing the Phase 1 Document

  • Objective:

To complete the phase 1 document to submit to CaL

  • Resources:
  1. Go to the CaL Website and download the Phase 1 Guidelines for Maker Projects: https://cityaslabindia.org/phase-1-checklist/maker-project/.
  • Time: 2 Classes (60 - 90 min)
  • Introduction (05 mins):
  1. Tell students that they have to submit a phase 1 document to City as Lab and receive feedback on the same BEFORE They can proceed.
  2. They will be using the next two classes to write this document.
  • Guidelines (15 min):

Go over the Phase 1 guiding document with students and make sure they understand what is needed. Teachers should encourage the students to go through the guidelines, this document will help teachers and students understand the feasibility, viability, and readiness of the idea students wish to undertake. Students have to start WRITING the Phase 1 document in line with the guidelines. You can discuss the questions below to guide their thinking.

  • Discussion (15 min):

Discuss the following questions with the group:

  1. Do I have the problem statement? Am I able to explain the problem statement?
  2. Why is it important to solve this problem in MY CITY? This is the part where they refer to the data they researched in the previous class
  3. How is it related to SDG #11?
  4. Do I understand clearly what the ideal solution will provide? 
  5. Do I have at least 1-2  ideas based on what ideal solution should provide?
  6. Can I visually represent these ideas so as to aid people in understanding them better?
  7. Can you select only one idea out of all that you would love to work on?
  8. How many months/work hours will be needed for this idea to be prototyped?
  9. What secondary research do I need to do to write my phase 1 document?
  10. Do I know how to CITE something? (If students do not know how to cite something properly then they will need a mini session BEFORE this class to learn how to do that. See lesson 5 to give you some ideas on how to do that.) https://www.mendeley.com/guides/apa-citation-guide/).
  • Work Time (25 min):

Let students begin writing. Guide them during this time.

  • Closure (5 min):

Summarize what you did. Ask students to work on the Phase 1 document for homework and bring it next time.

  • Class 2:

You can spend this whole class on guiding them  to complete writing their Phase 1 document and then submit it.
