Approaching Finalized Protagonists
Practice the script that students will use to approach potential protagonists and get informed consent.

- NOTE 1: Before this lesson,the teacher should meet with each group and ensure they have their 3 protagonists finalized i.e. the people whose stories they want to tell. BEFORE you proceed with approaching them, PLEASE GET APPROVAL from the CaL Team
- Note 2:This lesson is to help students learn HOW to approach someone whose story they want to tell. If the school or the parent is going to be approaching the potential protagonists, you can skip this lesson.
- Time: 60mins
- Instructions for the Teacher:
- Introduction (5 minutes):

- Tell students that they will have to approach the people whose stories they want to tell and explain the project to them before getting their permission to tell their story.
- Role Play (30 min):

- Ask them to pretend you are one of those people. Discuss with the whole class what would they say when they approach you. As you discuss list on the board:
- Name and School
- A brief description of the project
- What they need from you
- Give students 5-8 minutes to practice with a partner what they would say. Then call a few students to the front of the class and do the role play. DO at least 2 or 3.
- After each role play, debrief with the class what they did well and what they could have improved.
- Then YOU role model how it needs to be done. We have provided a script below for your assistance. You can modify it as you want. You may need to translate it as well depending on who the kids are talking to.
- Ask them to pretend you are one of those people. Discuss with the whole class what would they say when they approach you. As you discuss list on the board:
- Practice (10 min):

- Let students practise the script with a partner. Feel free to modify or translate as suits your context.
- Informed Consent (10 min):

- Go through the idea of informed consent
- Share the format here and go over it
- Informed consent is MANDATORY for the story to be accepted to CaL
- Closure (5 min):

- Tell students that they have a week to approach all their potential protagonists and get permission to move forward.
