Exploring Literary Devices in Narrative Writing – Part 1
- Objective:
- Introduce students to various literary devices and their definitions.
- Help students understand how to use literary devices in their narrative writing effectively.

- Time: 120 min
- Introduction (10 mins):
- Begin the lesson by engaging students in a discussion about storytelling and the importance of descriptive writing.
- Explain that literary devices are tools that writers use to enhance their writing and engage the reader’s imagination.
- Share the list of literary devices that will be covered in the lesson. – Handouts with examples of literary devices
- Distribute the above handout with examples of each literary device to the students.
- Explanation and Examples (20 minutes):
- Take each literary device one by one and explain its definition and purpose.
- Provide examples for each literary device and discuss how they add depth and creativity to a narrative.
- Encourage students to ask questions and provide examples if they have any.
- Interactive Activity (30 minutes):
- Divide the class into small groups or pairs.
- Provide each group with a short narrative prompt or story starter. (The short story is in the Notes section)
- Instruct the students to work together and incorporate at least three different literary devices into their narratives..
- Group Discussion (15 minutes):
- Ask students to share their observations on how the use of literary devices enhanced the narratives.
- Discuss the effectiveness of each literary device in creating imagery, engaging the reader, and conveying meaning.
- Application (35 min):
- In their project groups, ask students to read their own stories and think about how to incorporate literary devices in the same.
- Walk around and help students. Ensure you have read their story beforehand and given them feedback.
- Closure of Lesson (10 min):
- Summarise the key points covered in the lesson, emphasising the importance of using literary devices to make writing more compelling and engaging.
- Encourage students to continue exploring and incorporating literary devices in their story.

- Encourage students to read books and stories that employ various literary devices so that they can recognise them in context.
