Text Features for a Picture Book (Part 2)

  • Objective:
  • Identify and analyze additional text features in picture books, including repetition, rhyme, alliteration, wordplay, and captions or labels. Resource: Text Features for a Picture Book

  • Develop creative thinking and writing skills by exploring and applying these text features in their own writing.

  • Chart paper or whiteboard
  • Markers or chalk
  • Various picture books with different text features (Repetition, Rhyme, Alliteration, Wordplay, Caption or Labels)

  • Time: 60 min
  • Review of Previously Discussed Text Features (05 mins):
  • Begin the lesson by briefly reviewing the text features discussed in the previous lesson (narrative text, dialogue, descriptive language, sound effects, onomatopoeia)
  • Remind students of their roles and effects in picture books and their significance in storytelling.
  • Introducing Additional Text Features (10 mins):
  • Introduce the new text features: repetition, rhyme, alliteration, wordplay, and captions or labels.

  • Engage students in a discussion about how these text features enhance the reading experience and create interest and engagement.
  • Analysing Text Features in Picture Books (20 min):
  • Distribute different picture books that prominently feature the new text features to small groups of students.
  • Instruct students to read and analyse their assigned picture book, focusing on the specific text feature.
  • Have groups discuss and identify examples of the assigned text feature, highlighting its purpose, impact, and contribution to the story.
  • Applying Text Features in Writing (20 min):
  • Explain to students that they will now have the opportunity to incorporate the new text features in their writing.
  • Provide writing materials and encourage students to choose a text feature they find interesting and would like to use in their story.
  • Instruct students to write a short paragraph or story using the chosen text feature, incorporating it effectively into their writing.
  • Closure of Lesson (05 min):
  • Invite a few students to share their written pieces with the class, emphasising the use of the text features they focused on.
  • Summarise the key points discussed in the lesson, highlighting the role and significance of repetition, rhyme, alliteration, wordplay, and captions or labels in picture books.
  • Tips:
  • Encourage students to actively seek out picture books that showcase the text features discussed in the lesson, providing them with a rich variety of examples to draw inspiration from.
  • Provide opportunities for students to share and discuss their written pieces, fostering a supportive and collaborative writing community.
