Visual Literacy with Picture Books – Understanding Illustrations

- Time: 60 min
- Introduction (10 mins):
- Begin the lesson by reviewing the importance of visual literacy and how illustrations enhance the reading experience in picture books.
- Explain that in this lesson, students will focus on understanding and analyzing the illustrations in picture books to gain deeper insights into the story.
- Share examples of picture books with engaging illustrations to generate interest and highlight the significance of illustrations in storytelling.
- Main Activity - Exploring Illustrations (40 min):
- Introduce different aspects of illustrations, including composition, context, colour, hue, tone, and text style. Use sample picture book excerpts or examples to demonstrate each aspect.
- Provide the Visual Literacy Strategies handout to students. Discuss the strategies for analysing illustrations, emphasising the importance of observation and critical thinking.
- Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a picture book or excerpts from different picture books.
- In their groups, ask students to examine the illustrations and discuss the elements of composition, context, colour, hue, tone, and text style. Encourage them to analyse how these elements contribute to the story’s meaning or mood.
- Have each group share their findings with the class. Use chart paper to create visual representations of the different aspects of illustrations and their interpretations.
- Facilitate a class discussion to deepen understanding and encourage students to make connections between the illustrations and the story’s themes or messages.
- Closure of Lesson (10 min):
- Summarise the key points discussed during the lesson, emphasising the impact of illustrations on storytelling and their role in conveying meaning and mood.
- Encourage students to reflect on how their interpretation of the illustrations enhanced their understanding of the story.
- Provide an opportunity for students to ask questions or share their thoughts and reflections on the lesson.
- Tips:
- Choose picture books with diverse illustration styles and themes to cater to the interests and preferences of your students.
- Encourage students to support their observations about the illustrations with evidence from the text or other visual cues.
- Consider incorporating hands-on activities, such as creating illustrations or analysing specific scenes from picture books, to further engage students in the learning process.
