Working with Wood

  • Objective:
  1. To introduce students to the basic concepts of working with wood
  2. To teach students how to use basic hand tools for woodworking
  3. To provide students with an opportunity to practice woodworking skills
  • Resources:
  1. Pine Wood (pre-cut into small pieces)
  2. Hand saws
  3. Sandpaper
  4. Wood glue
  5. Clamps
  6. Safety goggles
  • Pre-Work:
  • Time: 60 min
  • Introduction (05 mins):
  1. Begin by introducing the topic of woodworking and its applications in maker projects (based on pre-work). Check what students learned from the video.
  2. Discuss the importance of safety when working with hand tools and demonstrate the use of safety goggles.
  • Basic Techniques (10 mins):
  1. Demonstrate the use of a hand saw for cutting wood and guide the students in using it safely.
  2. Explain the process of sanding the wood to make it smooth and demonstrate its use.
  • Wood Joining Techniques (20 mins):
  1. Discuss the different techniques used for joining wood and demonstrate the use of wood glue – Basic Wood Joinery
  2. Provide students with pre-cut wooden pieces and ask them to practice joining the pieces using wood glue.
  3. Assist students as needed and encourage them to be creative with their designs.
  4. You can call in 1-2 carpenters too who can teach them how to work with tools and wood.
  • Final Touches and Clean Up (10 mins):
  1. After the glue has dried, have students sand their projects to make them smooth – Hand Sanding Basics
  2. Discuss the importance of cleaning up after working with wood and have students dispose of any sawdust or wood scraps.
  • Tips:
    1. Observe students as they work on their projects and provide guidance and feedback as needed.
    2. Encourage students to be creative with their designs and encourage them to apply the woodworking techniques taught in the session.

      Extras: Assign students to research different types of wood and their properties to share in the next session.
