Phase 1 Checklist
Phase 1: Students submit the following for Phase 1 of their Maker Project
Due Date: August 15th 2025
Format: As a Google Doc on the folder shared by City as Lab
- PROBLEM STATEMENT: What is the problem you want to solve? Use the following structure: a) Describe where you live in some detail. b) Describe the problem: what is it, whom does it affect, why is it a big deal?
- RATIONALE: Why is it important to solve this problem? Use the following structure:
- Describe why it is important for YOU to solve this problem i.e., give a personal reason for becoming involved in this process.
- Two references /citations from secondary research that fortify the rationale and are woven into the narrative to present a convincing argument for why this problem is relevant to YOUR CITY i.e., connects to the bigger picture. Citations should be in the correct format in a bibliography.
- Explain how the problem is aligned with SGD 11 and specifically, to which target. How will tackling this problem help your city/community move closer to this particular target under SDG 11. See the theme document to know the list of targets.
- EXISTING SOLUTIONS: Identify 2-3 solutions to this problem that already exist. List the pros and cons of each solution and justify how your solution builds on these designs or is different from these designs. Ensure you include proper citations for each in the bibliography.
- YOUR SOLUTION: Very briefly describe your idea for the solution. Talk about how your idea builds on or is different from the existing solutions. Include a drawing if possible.
- RESOURCES: List what materials you will need AND who is an expert who can help you if you are stuck. Please note all resources will have to be sourced and paid for by the school. Please include a tentative budget.
- BIBLIOGRAPHY: We need to be able to check your references and citations. Please learn how to make a bibliography in APA format and include at the end of your document.
