SERVICE PROJECT
Phase 1 Checklist
Phase 1: Students submit the following for Phase 1 of their Service Project
Due Date: August 15th, 2025
Format: As a Google Doc in the folder shared by City as Lab
- NEEDS STATEMENT: Service projects can be of two types:
- Students can try and serve the local community by trying to solve a problem the community is facing e.g., there is a lack of dustbins and they see a lot of litter lying around. So, students raise money and buy dustbins, install them and educate people on using them. They then track how much people are using the dustbins and if their solution has had an impact.
- Students can try and fulfil the needs of a community of people e.g., they can provide PPE or N95 masks to hospital workers where needed. In this section students describe what NEED they are trying to serve. They must describe who will benefit from this service project.
- RATIONALE: Describe why it is important to solve this problem:
- Give a personal reason for becoming involved in this process
- Provide at least TWO references for why the problem they are solving is important for their entire CITY e.g., they may be putting dustbins in their own community but garbage is a problem for the whole city. Students will need to provide two references (newspaper articles, journal articles, etc.) to prove that even though they are trying to meet this need within their own community, this is an important NEED of the whole city.
- SUCCESS CRITERIA: In this section, students describe how they will know if their project has been successful. For example, students may consider any of the following as success criteria: distribution of X number of personal preventive equipment, disappearance of garbage, etc. The success criteria have to be define BEFORE the project starts, hence it must be included in this phase 1 submission.
- MEASURE OF SUCCESS: Students describe HOW they will measure their success: surveys, interviews, photos, other methods. What evidence will you collect to show that you have had an impact and met your success criteria?
- PROCESS: List the steps you will take to achieve success. Write details about whom you will need to meet, what permissions you may need, what work will you need to do in school or out of school, will you need to collect any data or information before starting, etc. Please write in detail so we can give inputs on whether you are thinking in the right direction.
- DELEGATION: Who will do the following:
- Set up appointments
- Capture videos and photos at every step of the way
- Make the final video
- Ensure video adheres the CaL rubric.
